Generally, RESPECT yields a high rate of return. Consider Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. There's not a lot of difference between them. Both are oddly good looking. Tom is 5'7", Val is 6'. Val was the youngest student ever admitted to the famed Julliard School. They're both about the same age. So what's the deal? Why does Tom earn from $20 million to $70 million per picture while Val earns more in the neighborhood of $7 million per picture?
I believe a large part of the answer lies in respect. In every interview I've ever read with another actor mentioning Tom Cruise, they always mention how absolutely respectful he is. Paul Newman described him as the most respectful young actor he had ever worked with. In every article and interview I've read about Val Kilmer, they always mention his bad temper and lack of respect.
If I'm sounding like a Rosie O'Donnel kind of fan of Tom Cruise.... hold on. That's not the case. I like him alright. I'm always amazed by his transformation in each movie. For the first five minutes I see a slight resemblance to rodents and then alakazam, it's gone and he's just that good looking young man for the rest of the movie. I find Val Kilmer taller, better looking and generally a better actor. But that's just a matter of personal taste. And let's face it, I don't have to work with him.
Here's the point I've been meandering up to. I see a dramatic reduction in the amount of respect children are taught to show others. I see children speaking to their parents and grandparents hatefully, let alone other adults. I see parents and grandparents allowing it. I wanted to mention it's not just a moral and ethical issue. It's a financial issue as well. Respect does earn a high rate of return. Tom Cruise though much shorter, earns ten times more money than Val Kilmer. Put yourself in the shoes of the producers, who would you rather pay millions to work with? The guy who respects you or the one who only demands your respect while giving little in return? Think about that next time you're teaching your children respect or the lack thereof. It's not just a moral issue. Respect is money in the bank. Disrespect is costly. Let's teach our children those facts and while we're at it, let's make sure we're teaching them by example. Kids don't learn respect from disrespectful parents no matter how hard it is taught. Disrespectful children are born of disrespectful adults. Insure your children's financial security today, be a respectful person.
