When Janet Reno asked all of us to do whatever we can to help reduce prejudice in our world and to encourage peaceful resolution of conflicts, I knew I had to say something on a wallpaper.
Only I didn't know what to say.
Then I remembered Mark Twain said, "When in doubt, tell the truth."
So that's what I did on the wallpaper.
I was once asked by a racist if I'd rather have a white neighbor or a black neighbor. I told the truth then too. I said, "I'll take the good neighbor, thank you."
Racists deny themselves that option. If a racist goes to pick a brain surgeon to operate on their own precious child who is clinging to life by a thread and the best surgeon is the wrong race, the racist must choose the lower quality surgeon, the one of his own race with the shakey hands...... oops. Services will be at 3 p.m.
Prejudice is ignorance because it denys the prejudiced person the ability to choose the best in the field. If you can't choose the best you lose out to those who can. See?
In general, the salary gap is narrowing in part because the economy demands a high-quality work force, forcing employers to make hiring and pay decisions on merit, she says.
''They're looking for good employees, regardless of color, regardless of sex,'' Freeman says.

"The mind, once stretched by an empowering idea,
can never fully shrink to its original dimensions."
- Oliver Wendell Holmes, paraphrased
