What Would Lassie Do?
During the holidays, treat family
the way Lassie would treat them.
Play with them, enjoy them,
look over and tolerate them.
Give them kindness and affection.
Let's face it, they're only humans.

Christmas Holidays, a wonderful family time for some and not so wonderful for others. So many hurts in the past for some. And so many fears of hurts in the here and now because of them. We pull those fears up close, bright, full color, animated fears replaying right before our eyes.... like the covers we pull up at night to protect us from the boogie man and just as ineffective. All they help us do is put up that polite front. "I'll be nice. I promise, I'll be polite." Which is just another way to say, "It doesn't matter that you may have changed over the years, most certainly changed just as I have, I will not let you in, I will not give you a chance. I refuse to fully enjoy you because if I hold on to all the hurt in the past, remember it in clearest details.... you can't hurt me now.
But what if, just what if that really is in the past? What if all the hurt you dredge up to protect you is the biggest hurt there is? What the heck, have courage. Have a little faith. Give it a go. Just for this one Christmas, make it a point to fully enjoy them no matter what happened in the past. Of course they hurt you in the past. Our mistakes always hurt those closest to us and who is closer than our family? Do we know anyone who hasn't felt hurt by family? No. No such thing. So let it go. And as you look at each and every person this Christmas remember the one and only commandment that Jesus gave us.... the one that Lassie follows without a thought.... love.
