CHANGE HISTORY?
MAKE HISTORY!

Of course we can't change history,
but only the part that's in the past.
It's the history we're making
that interests me.

Text version of this column

Most people are resigned to history. You hear them say it aloud with irritation or disgust as they throw their hands in the air, "Oh well, you can't change history!"

The truth is we can change the most important element of history.... the history we're making today with the actions we choose to take...and the actions we don't. Everything we think, say and do is dropping a stone into a still pond. The ripples spread wider and wider until the entire pond is alive.

A recent preliminary interview for an upcoming documentary, explains my personal interest in making history...

What kind of history would you like to see us making?

  • I'd like to see the most important information that everyone needs and almost no one has, taken to the masses, in movies, novels, tv shows, songs and computer games.

And what would you say is the most important information that we all need and almost no one has?

  • I believe it's the concept of utilizing our negative emotions instead of suffering them or controlling them.

And why do you feel like that's not just important, but actually the most important information everyone needs?

  • Because negative emotions are gifts from God when they're utilized instead of suffered or controlled. They're alarm clocks that wake us to take corrective action when it's needed. They were never designed to make us suffer. "Pain is necessary, suffering is optional" is especially true about negative emotions. People are hurting themselves and others unnecessarily because they've never even heard of making good use of something that they've been taught to only suffer or control. That must be changed.

What if someone doesn't want to utilize their negative emotions?

  • That's great.... as long as they know it's an option, that's fine with me. I'm not here to make anyone do anything, just to be sure they've heard of it. How can we fully blame someone for not keeping a cool head when they've never even heard that anger is a gift when you know how to use it? We can't.

One last question, before we let you get back to your web site.... Why do you feel that "you" have to make this happen?

  • How could I "not" feel that I must make this happen? If you knew of a relatively small amount of information that would dramatically decrease unnecessary suffering in our world if it were only shared, wouldn't YOU share it?

Wait, I still don't get it. Admittedly it is an important concept, but it's in Tony Robbins' Awaken the Giant Within and you've got it all over your web site, so why does it have to be in movies, novels, tv shows, songs and computer games?

  • Because it's such a new concept that most people will never even attempt to utilize their anger, anxiety, depression, loneliness, or remorse until they've watched others doing it quite a bit. Most people must see it and hear it repeatedly before they'll try it on themselves.

God Grant Me The Serenity
to accept the things I can not change,
(the past)
the Courage to change the things
that must be changed,
(the present and the future)
the Wisdom to know the difference,
and the Strength to never ever give up.

"The mind, once stretched by an empowering idea,
can never fully shrink to its original dimensions."

- Oliver Wendell Holmes, paraphrased
