Whether you're the most protective dog,

the back up dog,
or the one who mostly watches;
BE who you are.
Look. YOU are adorable.
Just the way you are, you're adorable!

I walked out of a convenience store last year near Cookson, Oklahoma and saw these guys. How could I NOT take a picture of three adorable black and white Boston Terriers in a white pickup with black trim? I love the differences in their responses. The wallpaper is all about you. This page is gonna be my dog rant. Read on if you dare. :)

Dogs are gifts from God. If you're lonely and don't have a pet, not only are you lonely, you're foolish too. That's no reason to make less than intelligent choices when picking out a pet though.

I know a sweetheart of a woman who had a five year old and a pit bull. He was just a big, friendly, goofy pit, not trained to attack at all. But one day he attacked her daughter. He ripped an ear off, tore a lot of her scalp loose, broke bones in her face biting her. Though she lived over it, to this day, she has nerve damage in her face that prevents one side of it from much expression.

Of course, the dog was put down that same day and yet, that didn't stop them from owning pit bulls. I've never understood that.

Then there are the parents of a wild and very over sized five year old, and they bought that child a miniature poodle! Hello, it's cruel and unusual punishment to give a delicate boned dog to an undisciplined child. It reminds me of when my cousin's 4 year old monster child walked up to my mother's small dog and kicked it as hard as he could with his little pointy toed cowboy boot. His mother gave him a mild reprimand and my mother blew up. She cussed out my cousin, told her what a lousy mother she was and that if she didn't whale the tar out of that little bleep or get the heck out of her house immediatly, then she (my mother) was going to whale the tar out of my cousin. My cousin left. I cheered and we took the dog to the vet. She had a cracked rib, but lucky for everyone concerned, no internal injuries. Bottom line, teach your child how to respect pets or keep them away from them, one or the other.

Then there was the utter fool (ME) who gave a collie to a friend who wouldn't lift a hand to brush the dog, de-flea her, or even take the time to sweet-talk her..... a Collie! One of the sweetest, kindest, smartest dog breeds in the world is still a high maintenance dog and some folks should either only get a low maintenance dog or not own a dog at all. I've never fully gotten over the guilt of that mistake. It's a mistake I'll never make again.

If you can have a dog, and don't have one, get one. But before you get one, think about what kind of dog would be good for you and your family and what kind of dog can enjoy, survive and put up with the lot of you as well. I am an absent minded computer fiend. Therefore, the right dog for me is a low maintenance dog. Mr. Minnihan is a short haired dachshund mix who will sit patiently beside me giving me the "Minnihan mind-meld" stare until I ask him what he wants. Then he runs to the door, the toy or the empty dish and I give him whatever he wants.

Choosing the right dog, is the smartest, wisest, kindest decision you'll ever make. Choosing the wrong dog, is even worse than not getting a dog at all, it's the most foolish, cruelest decision you can ever make.

You are adorable. God loves you and wants you to have a dog. Be good to yourself and kind to a poor dumb animal, get the RIGHT dog for you. Pray for the right dog. Envision, imagine the right dog. Look for the right dog and when you find it, take it home and be good to it till death do you part.

Choose the right pet for you.

Just one more thing: If you've got a five year old that you haven't trained not to be cruel to animals yet, you're absolutely remiss in your duties. Children who are allowed to be cruel to animals tend to be cruel to people too.
