A Remedial Reading Cure

boy reading the television This is easier on everyone than any other reading program I've ever seen. It's pretty simple, just one highly effective rule and this works whether you instill the rule in yourself or your offspring. The rule is that you can only watch one hour of TV a day or a week or whatever with the sound on, and the rest of the time you allot to watch TV must be with the sound off and the closed captioning turned on and watching programming you really love.

If you don't have closed captioning on your TV, then be aware you can get a pretty good color tv with cc for about $75 at a flea market or pawn shop. Now here's the one experience that showed me how well this works. My nephew Nick only made D- and F in his remedial reading classes, and he was not dyslexic. I got my brother and sister-in-law to install this rule with him, and three days later, when Nick's best friend (who always made straight A's in regular reading class) came over, we were sitting there watching cartoons and explaining to him how the new system works. Nick was leaned forward, his head going back and forth like a typewriter, reading the text, not with great ease, but clearly keeping up. His friend the A student said, "Man that looks next to impossible." And Nick cut him a lightning, quick look and then right back to the text and said, "No, really, it's pretty easy. I can do it." His reading scores jumped to B's.

As much as possible allow yourself or your child to watch favorite shows because this associates the love you feel for the show with the love you feel for reading. I'd think three months would be long enough to bring the grades up. You never feel the same about reading again. Ever. The only really important thing to remember is this..... if you don't enforce your rules consistently with your offspring or yourself, please, don't use this approach because no approach works if you're not consistent.

I don't have a whole lot of original ideas, but this is one of them. Try it on and let me know how you like it. :)
